On the wall, close to the ceiling, there are four words written in gold italic lettering. This “golden rule” is the motto by which Deborah Duke Chatfield designs: “good design always lasts.”

Those words echo throughout her designs. Mixing elements, Deborah delights in providing her clients with designs that genuinely reflect their personalities; a little modern, a little traditional and a little eclectic, but always comfortable, functional and beautiful. Deborah Duke Chatfield has the unique ability to embellish classic styles with updated touches, creating innovative design styles which surpass the original in form and functionality.

In addition to her design services, Chatfield Design, located in Rockport, Maine, carries a selection of furniture, fabrics and wall coverings. The store brims with Deborah’s other love: art. Every nook and cranny reveals another treasure; photographs, sculptures and sketches, which enhance the casual elegance created by her design style.

A longtime art history enthusiast, she sits on the board of trustees of the Farnsworth Art Museum. Deborah’s own artistic endeavors are most evident in her work with furniture. The passion she has for restoring and reupholstering vintage furniture is matched only by her pride in finding the perfect antique textile for each piece.

“For me, art and fabric are seamless,” she says. “Furniture is like a blank canvas and what you apply to it is like the paint.” This passion is behind her preparation to launch her own furniture line, which will include beds, bureaus, tables, end tables, armchairs and sofas.
